Closed Loop and Open Loop cooling towers are two common cooling methods in industrial and HVAC systems, with different working principles, application scenarios, and advantages and disadvantages.

1、 Closed Loop Vs Open Loop Cooling Tower Basic principle differences:

Open Loop Cooling Tower:

Water is directly exposed to the air, and after spraying, it comes into contact with the air and evaporates to remove heat.

Hot water flows from the equipment into the cooling tower and is sprayed through nozzles. Some of the water evaporates and carries away heat, and the cooled water returns to the equipment for continued use.

Features:

Direct contact between water and air may result in evaporation, pollution, and scaling.

The circulating water system is interconnected with the internal environment of the cooling tower.

Closed Loop Cooling Tower:

The cooling water circulates in a closed pipeline and does not come into direct contact with the outside air/water.

The outside of the pipe is cooled by spraying water and air, taking away the heat from the hot water inside the pipe.

The liquid inside the tube (water or other coolant) should never be exposed and kept clean.

Features:

The cooling medium is in a closed system and does not come into contact with the outside world.

Heat exchange is achieved through heat exchangers (or coils).
