BAC (Baltimore Aircoil Company) cooling towers use automatic water level control systems to maintain the correct basin water level and ensure reliable operation.
Adds fresh water to replace losses from evaporation, drift, and blowdown.
Operated by a mechanical float or electronic sensor.
Mechanical float ball or electronic probes detect water level.
Signals the make-up valve to open/close automatically.
Protects the pump from running dry.
Shuts down the system if water falls below safe level.
Prevents flooding if valve sticks or excessive rainwater enters the basin.
As water evaporates, the basin water level drops.
The float sensor detects the low level → make-up valve opens → city water refills the basin.
Once the level reaches the set point, the valve closes automatically.
Overflow piping ensures excess water is discharged safely.
Simple, low-cost, reliable.
Common in small/medium BAC cooling towers.
Uses stainless steel probe sensors with a solenoid valve.
Provides more precise control, adjustable set points.
Recommended for large towers or where stable water control is critical.
Normal operating level: At or just below the make-up float setting.
Minimum safe level: Above pump suction to prevent cavitation.
Overflow level: Slightly above float set point, to discharge excess water.
